We Tracked 95,495 Job Application Attempts. Here's What Stops Them Going Through.
Resumly submits job applications on job seekers' behalf, so we see what happens between pressing "submit" and an employer actually receiving it. Most applications go through. The ones that don't usually fail on something small — a location box, a phone format, a question nobody noticed was mandatory.
Key findings
- 83.6% of applications went through on the first attempt, and 92.5% eventually did. 7.5% never went through.
- Form validation errors were the #1 cause of failure — 42.8% of every failed attempt.
- Location / address fields were named in 17.1% of validation failures — more than any other field. Phone number came next (7.2%).
- 2.2% of attempts reached a listing that had already closed — the posting was still up, the job wasn't.
- Failure is rarely final: 86.1% of applications that failed once went through on a later attempt.
Methodology & data (read this)
- Sample: 95,495 application attempts that Resumly's auto-apply service submitted on behalf of job seekers between April 2026 to September 2026, across five widely used applicant tracking systems. Internal test accounts are excluded.
- What "went through" means: the employer's application system returned a confirmation. "No confirmation shown" means we submitted but saw no confirmation, so some of those applications may in fact have been received.
- Automated, not manual: these attempts were made by software on a person's behalf. Two of the causes — human-verification checks and our own technical failures (14.4% of failures) — are specific to automated submission. We report them rather than hide them. A person applying by hand meets the same forms, but different friction.
- Field analysis: each validation failure's message is matched against field keywords. One message can name several fields, so the shares don't add to 100%. Most messages also use a generic "this field is required" phrasing, which we exclude because it names no field.
- Privacy: fully aggregate and anonymized. No job seeker, employer, job posting or message text is published, and messages are categorized inside our database without leaving it.
Why applications fail to go through
Share of 21,732 failed attempts, by cause. Most failures are the form itself rejecting an answer — not the employer rejecting the candidate.

The form fields that break applications

Most failures are recoverable
Across 79,663 distinct applications, 8,254 needed more than one attempt — and 86.1% of those eventually went through. A rejected form is usually a fixable answer, not a closed door.
What this means if you're applying
- Pick your location from the list. Many forms only accept a location chosen from their own suggestions — typed text that looks right can still count as empty.
- Check the country code on your phone number. Phone fields were named in 7.2% of validation failures; a number entered under the wrong country is rejected even when the digits are correct.
- Answer every work-authorization and sponsorship question. They were named in 4.7% of failures and are almost always mandatory, even when they look optional.
- Keep screening answers short. Free-text boxes often carry a character limit you can't see until you submit.
- Apply to new postings early. 2.2% of attempts reached a listing that had already closed while it was still advertised.
Getting the form through is only the first gate. Once it arrives, a resume still has to match the job (the average matches just 47%) and read well to an ATS (32% of resumes have zero quantified results). And even then, rejections outnumber interview invitations 24 to 1.
